Caves Exploration Mayan History River Floating Hiking Adventure Nature and Wildlife

Belize Caving

Belize offers a unique, guided journey through ancient limestone networks once used by the Mayans for sacred rituals and ceremonies. You will hike through the lush jungle to reach expansive, cathedral-like caverns, where you can navigate underground rivers on floats while equipped with helmets and flashlights. Led by expert guides who ensure safety and provide historical context, visitors can admire stunning geological formations and authentic Mayan artifacts, making it a very popular adventure that seamlessly blends Belize’s natural beauty with its rich archaeological heritage. While there are many caves in Belize, the best one depends on your preferred level of adventure—whether you want a relaxing float, a serene paddle, or a heart-pumping hike.

Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch
This is the most famous spot for cave- tubing. A gentle 30–45 minute jungle hike followed by a relaxing float through a series of limestone caves. You’ll see "cathedral" ceilings and crystal formations while drifting on the river. It is often paired with zip-lining or a visit to the Belize Zoo.

Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM Cave)
Consistently rated as the #1 sacred cave in the world by National Geographic, this is for those who want a more intense experience. You will hike, swim across a river to enter the cave, and then wade through water and squeeze through tight passages. You will see intact Mayan pottery and the famous "Crystal Maiden", the calcified skeleton of a Mayan sacrificial victim that sparkles under a flashlight.

Barton Creek Cave
If you prefer not to get wet or hike long distances, this is the perfect alternative. You can explore it by canoe with an expert guide that paddles you through massive, high-ceiling chambers. See Mayan skulls and pottery on high ledges along the cave walls.

Crystal Cave
Known as Mountain Cow Cave it is located within the St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park, this cave offers a challenging adventure requiring guided tours and proper gear. This tour involves a steep jungle hike followed by rappelling and crawling through mud and narrow paths. The reward is the chamber, where the walls are covered in glittering crystals that look like diamonds.

Rio Frio Cave
Located in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, this is a "dry" cave and is easily accessible. It features a massive 65-foot arched entrance (the largest in Belize). You don’t need a guide to walk through it, as it is naturally lit at both ends. There are huge stalactites and a natural sandy beach inside the cave.
