Belize Facts

Belize is the smallest country in Central America, bordering with Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the east and with the Caribbean Sea to the east. Belize has the lowest population density in Central America.  Its capital is Belmopan. Belize is a beautiful country, and the best date to visit it is during dry season, between December and May. The rainy season gradually starts in June and lasts until November.

Belize is a Caribean country and its main language is English. The main attractions are its islands and beaches on the mainland, but it also has other interesting places hidden in the rainforest, like Mayan ruins and caves. One of the most important attraction is the Barrier Reef. The Belize Barrier Reef is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System and is the second largest barrier in the world. This makes Belize an excellent destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Belize includes three atolls: Turneffe Atol, Coral Glover Reef, and Coral Lighthouse Reef. The Great Blue Hotel is located at the last one, brought to fame by Jacques Cousteau in 1970. But Belize is not only beaches and forest – it also has Mayan Ruins and caves, so interesting that they leave the visitor hypnotized. Belize Districts

Belize City
Belize City is the largest city in the country and used to be the capital of the country. Belize International Airport (BZE) is located here and is where most international flights arrive. From here you can take ground transportation or domestic flights to other destination of Belize. There is not much to see in Belize City, but it is the gateway to this beautiful country.

Cayo District
Cayo District you will find the capital of the country, Belmopan, it is also the largest district. Cayo is the perfect place for the traveler looking for adventure. There are several Mayan archaeological sites such as Caracol, Xunantunich, El Pilar and Cahal Pech, to name a few. There are also natural reserves; Two of these reserves are Blue Hole National Park and Guanacaste National Park. Cayo District is also the perfect place for Ecotourism lovers. The capital of Cayo District is San Ignacio. From Cayo District you can easily visit the archaeological city of Tikal, located in Guatemala.
 

Corozal
Corozal is south of the Mexican border and its capital is the city of Corozal. Corozal twon is small, not on the main tourist routes, but it offers plenty of activities, such as sport fishing, visit to Mayan sites and birdwatching. Corozal town is also a haven for retirees from Europe and North America. The main destination in Corozal District is San Pedro, located in Ambergris Caye. This island is very popular for scuba diving and snorkeling. You can also practice other water sports. Ambergirs is the most famous island off the coast of Belize.

Orange walk
Located just an hour from Belize City you will find Orange Walk town, also called "Ciudad Azucar" by locals. Orange Walk is a paradise for bird watchers since you can find more than 400 species of birds in one of the most exotic places to visit. Orange Walk houses the Mayan ruins of Cuello and Lamanai.

Stann Creek
Staan Creek is the second largest district. Its capital is Dangriga. This district has the second highest point in Belize. It is also where one of Belize's most popular destinations is located, Placencia, with a large selection of resorts, hotels, and beaches. Another destination is the Garifuna village of Hopkins, which is fast becoming a major tourist destination in Belize. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Jaguar Reserve, can also be found in this district.

Toledo
The capital of Toledo is Punta Gorda. Although it is the least developed of the districts, it is also an attraction for adventure travelers, and includes several protected areas, rain forests, mountains, rivers, wildlife, bird watching, and beaches in the Caribbean ocean with coral reefs and Mayan villages.
